Re: Symptoms of overheating?
I am not sure. Since it started cutting out on a warm day while climbing a hill, I wondered if it was heat-related. But then the problem continued, under less "heated" conditions. A friend remarked once that my radiator core seemed smaller than normal, and asked if I had overheating issues...

Re: Cutting out on acceleration
Well, replacing the dashpot oil with 3 in 1 oil has made a substantial improvement. In fact, it seems to be running normally now. But now I'm a little perplexed. The trouble started a few weeks ago and I don't remember if I had tinkered with the dashpot oil or not then. I must have done something.

Symptoms of overheating?
Ok, dumb question: How do you know if the car is overheating? I don't have any temperature gauges fitted. I'm not getting steam or anything like that.

Re: Cutting out on acceleration
There's oil in the dashpot. Maybe too much? I know there's lots of debate about the right oil to use. I believe it's just engine oil in there now (30w). I could try syringing it out and replacing it with 3in1 oil

Cutting out on acceleration
Greetings all, I'm having a problem with my 948 Minor cutting out when accelerating. It had been running fine, and I took a drive including a climb up a decent little hill. It was warm that day, and climbing that hill it started cutting out. I eventually made it, and managed to get back home, but ba...

OK, I redid the test after a good drive. However, the results are pretty much the same.

Compression test on 948
Greetings all, So I attempted a compression test on my '59 948, and the results seem fairly dismal. This is the first time I've ever tried to do a compression test on anything, so there's the possibility the results are operator error some how. Here's what I did: pulled all the plugs. They're all bl...

Trouble downshifting into 2nd gear
Greetings all, My second gear is getting "crunchy." Occasionally accidentally grind it while shifting. It is no problem when I'm accelerating, but when I'm decelerating, like cornering, I have to be very careful and slow getting it into second to avoid grinding the gears. I occasionally ca...

Re: Headlight only works on high beam
Thanks all for the information and suggestions. I've checked all the connections, but no joy. I've heard of fitting halogen replacements, which are brighter, and the bulbs can be easily sourced. Are these a straight swap? http://www.moss-europe.co.uk/Shop/ViewProducts.aspx?PlateIndexID=21679 Particu...

Headlight only works on high beam
I have a LHD car (should that matter), and the right side headlight has gone out. However, if I push the dip switch to turn the brights on, both headlights work (on bright). But if I hit the switch again, both lights go out completely. The high beam warning light in the speedo works. It appears I ha...

Locking left door handle
Morning all, I have a 1959 two-door, LHD. It has an external lock only on the right hand door. Which is a bit annoying. Is it possible to put a post-'64 left hand locking handle on it? I've read in some cases you don't need a whole new door, just drill a hole for the lock barrel? I don't suppose a v...

Re: Can I use a Mini choke cable?
Thanks all.
Thanks Roni, that is helpful. Should have mentioned that my current choke cable is not original or original spec, as it was set up for the weber... and I'm not sure that was done right either.

Can I use a Mini choke cable?
I just fitted an SU HS4 carb to my Minor. The choke cable mostly works, but it's sort of jerry rigged. Is a choke cable for a 998 mini interchangeable? Or would it be too long or too short? Also, the throttle cable was a bit frayed, but I was able to get it working. So I have the same question re th...

Re: 12G1316 head vs. 12G940
So can the 12G1316 head be fitted to a 948 just like a 12G940? Since the 12G940 head seems basically unobtainable here.

Re: Manifold help needed
I note in the description that it is supposedly better than "some cheap copy type." Is that really the case? How does it compare to say, this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Mini-998-1275-Cooper-GT-Performance-HIF44-HS4-inlet-intake-manifold-/110791777400?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarPar...

Re: New vacuum advance unit, no difference
Thanks guys for all the info. So I should try to hunt up one of these mythical 12g940 heads? I'm afraid finding one here in the states will be difficult / expensive since the morris is a rarer bird here. Just saw what they ask for new / remanufactured head.
This might go nowhere real fast...

Re: New vacuum advance unit, no difference
With a well-adjusted SU (very easy to set up, as there are only 3 adjustments- mixture, fast idle and idle), they are extremely driveable from cold. You should be able to start up and drive off immediately, with no trouble, almost regardless of the temperature. 3 yrs ago I was rattling around in mi...

Re: New vacuum advance unit, no difference
Thanks all for the feedback. I'd knew you'd tell me to ditch the Weber. I think I'd have to redo the exhaust if I do that. The current exhaust is a lcb... would going back to the standard exhaust cause decrease in performance? I am certain it's a 948. There's a "950" cast into the block. T...

Re: New vacuum advance unit, no difference
So is the too much /not enough choke / long warm up time not an issue with SUs? Besides that problem, the car seems to run pretty well. It was running rich, but swapping out the idle jet seemed to take care of that. Although it might still be better with smaller main jets too. It has exhaust headers...
