could someone explain how the vaseline trick works, and what to do. I will need to lay up a rebuilt engine for some time. And while on the subject, any views on assembly lube??

thank you to all, I think hardened washers and maybe locktite sounds the way to go.

ah. my mistake was to think there was a mistake, hardened washers sound a good idea.

Dear all, I am rebuilding a 1098 and have got stuck on the locktabs for the crank main bearing caps. As you can see from the pics on the site (link below), when I try and tighten down the bolt, they are crumpling, and rings are being gouged out by the bolt head, creating tiny bits of swarf, not good...

I am having problems getting the camshaft and crankshaft gears off with the the haynes 'screwdrivers at 180' method (and Haynes is confusing on the number of woodruff keys I will find). Will a puller help? Any particular sort? Or some other method? Thanks

good point about the bbq. Garage is small, am planning to take it out rolling it over onto some kind of home made dolly thing (with old tyres on) and sliding it back in. When you say damage to the base of the pillar, not sure what you mean, did you find a way of preventing it?

I want to turn the Morris on its side onto an old mattress to work on the underbody. Engine, gearbox and prop shaft have been removed. Any advice on how to do this? Should I remove the door, wings, anything else? Thanks in advance.
