Gearbox -803 into 1098 won't go - will it?

Hi, having changed a few 1098 engine and gearbox combinations I offered to help a friend take out his broken engine with 803 gearbox attached and replace it with a 1098 engine and gearbox. Problem was the hole in the floor for the gearbox isn't big enough. 2 solutions occour; cut back the floor pan a little to accomodate the 1098 gearbox (also needs the 1098 gearbox mounts which he hasn't got) or is it possible to seperate the 1098 gearbox where the extended remote is attached and just stick the old longer gear lever in the slot. It looks the same but somehow I don't think it is that easy.
Any thoughts, similar experiences or ideas out there?
many thanks
Mark

it is possible to make a hybrid box out of the 1098 donor (so I'm told) but not without a certain amount of work (If I remember correctly it's 'brixtonmorris' that has done it). The common solution is just to cut the floor.

Don't see why this won't work - try it and see ! Once you start cutting the floor you are spoiling the originality of the old car.

If I remember correctly, someone said that the problem is in the rear bearing being larger on the 1098 box. I think they said you have to machine out the tailpiece to fit the bigger bearing. However, don't put your 'box near a lathe without getting someone who has actually done it to confirm exactly what is needed. And if you find out, I'd be interested to as I want to do exatly the same job (well after the welding's done).

We went the way of cutting the floor. Have heard that you can get a new plate made that bolts on the back of the motor and connect to the 803 box.

Once again thanks for all the advice. I will pass this on to my freind. On balsnace it seems to me that keeping a matched gearbox and engine is easier and that cutting the floor is a small price to pay.
Cheers

I still don't see why the lever can't just be fitted in place of the remote control extension ! But it is 40 + years since I last saw an 803 box !

No - he wa talking about changing the whole rear end of the box - but won't the lever just fit in place of the extension on top of the newer box ?
