I'm going to by a new petrol pump, for no other reason than I want a second spare. I would like to know if anyone has had problems with these electronic ones, is that the way forward?

I do carry a spare SU with points in the boot as a get out of jail card.

when I got mine it was the ONLY way forwards because there was no conventional SU available,been on three years no problem except noisy,but can be fitted with rubber feet to cure that.Re furbed the old one (IN boot). So as long as its there the other will run forever

Others have reported early failure... I would stick with points.

Thanks for opinions, as the ones with points have served me well, perhaps that's good enough reason to stick with them. Hope you haven't spoken too soon Richard!

I recently had an electronic SU pump fitted, but it only lasted about 100 miles before it stopped working. Naturally the spare that I was carrying which was a known working older style points one worked without fault.

A replacement new electronic one was given to me by the supplier along with a second older points based spare and a profuse apology. So it seems carrying a spare doesn't automatically mean you will never need to use it

I refurbished my pump using a refurb kit from Burlen (includes, diaphragm, valve discs, washers, springs and the points. What it did include was a contact suppressor (varistor/transorb). Before I refurbished the pump, the contacts would arc quite strongly. After refurbishment and the supressor fitted, NO arcing at all. It was well worth doing and would recommend doing it. I am sure the electronic one is fine but in this case I feel worth doing.

The fuel pump performed flawlessly Les
