Crikey! :D Thanks for posting this Les.

I've always thought that, viewed from the side, the estates resemble Reliant Scimitars.

Yes I see where you're coming from. You know these Allegros have something about them. They get a lot of stick but I think it's a case of the emperors new clothes; Not many will go against the flow! :D Someone told me that the tax free thing has moved to 1973, if true the first Allegros would qualify.

But the question is - why did they move it up a year, and will they continue to do so from now on????

It should always have remained on a 25 year-old rolling basis.

They've put the VED for pre-2001/emissions vehicles up another fiver, now £140 for 12 mths.

My first car was an Allegro, back in the early 1980's. amazing to think there is now a club and some are being restored.
I had to scrap it due to rust, but then the engine clutch and gearbox were also shot.

I must say I had nothing but praise for mine, same old A series engine, and in my case at least, only superficial rust. Plenty of room under the bonnet too, very underrated car.

Even the 1100 version has enough pep to keep up today. You're right Les, everything is easy to get at, and I mean everything. There are no subframes despite popular belief and no springs to wear out. Only 1 oil to change etc.

Tbh, there's not a great deal to go wrong in them... just watch the front susp. brackets and front panel which rot out if neglected.
