Yes I see where you're coming from. You know these Allegros have something about them. They get a lot of stick but I think it's a case of the emperors new clothes; Not many will go against the flow! Someone told me that the tax free thing has moved to 1973, if true the first Allegros would qualify.
My first car was an Allegro, back in the early 1980's. amazing to think there is now a club and some are being restored.
I had to scrap it due to rust, but then the engine clutch and gearbox were also shot.
I must say I had nothing but praise for mine, same old A series engine, and in my case at least, only superficial rust. Plenty of room under the bonnet too, very underrated car.
Even the 1100 version has enough pep to keep up today. You're right Les, everything is easy to get at, and I mean everything. There are no subframes despite popular belief and no springs to wear out. Only 1 oil to change etc.
Tbh, there's not a great deal to go wrong in them... just watch the front susp. brackets and front panel which rot out if neglected.
