Hi Guys,

what gearbox gaiter do you use when fitting the Ford 5 speed gearbox?

Thank in advance.

You use the ford one, but cut the bottom 2 (i think) convolutions off.

You cut a hole as big as you can in the GRP floor panel, and then work out how much you have to cut off the gaiter to make it fit the hole!

Hi Chris,

can you post a pic of the gear lever gaiter area of your car, as I'd like to have an idea of what it should look like. Sierra gaiters are bl**dy expensive on fleabay :o

Regards

John

Here's the floor cover with square hole cut. An old pic I took at the time of fitting.

I'll pop out in a second and take a pic of how it looks finished too.

Hi,
You can re-use your original gaiter if you wish, it just depends on what look you are after / prefer.
I used mine in conjunction with a 'rose jointed quickshift' gear lever, of the type the rally Escorts etc. use. It's more precise than an original ford gear lever and being straight is, for me, nearer to the original look (though allot shorter :-? ).
Like I said it's down to preference / personal choice but you don't have to use a Ford type gaiter.
I just need to straighten mine, looking at my photo's! Never noticed this until now!!
Best wishes,
Mike.

Aha, I see. I think I've got a standard Ford gearlever, with the ugly great lump in the middle of the shaft. I'll see what it looks like assembled. I still can't believe how much Sierra gaiters are!!

Here's a link to one if you are interested. Bolts straight in place of the lumpy ford one with no modifications necessary. I just sprayed mine satin black, as I thought it looked better. Though you might need another gear knob.....
Best wishes,
Mike.

The sierra gaiter is so tall as it covers that rubber joint.
