HMnnn.... so you buy felt / bitumen pads for sound deadening and insulation... but here is a stupid question... which side do you glue to the bodywork? The felt / jute side or the bitumen side???

Yes, the bitumen side.

Make sure you don't use this kind of insulation in any areas that can get wet. If your car is kept outside, then with condensation that's almost everywhere! Also not a good idea to use on the underside of panels (E.g. bonnet and roof) as it is quite heavy and when it gets hot or aged it can fall off.

Er, do you get the impression that I don't recommend this particular stuff for a Minor? Definitely not a daily (all weather) driver.

Hmnnn.... what would you recommend then? Simply felt / jute - or is that the problem. I know this has been covered before - but am having trouble finding stuff that isn't jute type - would you think closed foam sheets are better - they are insulating and don't soak up water!

Oh, and what about carpet underlay then? Presumably that is the same - a felt / jute would soak up water but that is what is sold for Minors on esm etc... again would closed cell foam sheeting be better?

There are other types of sound insulation available, more along the lines of self adhesive roof flashing, stick on lead type stuff in short.
Can be pricey, but shouldn't hold any water

Hmnnn... other types of car roof insulation is even more expensive! In fact I have just found that this is what a lot of vw owners line their vans with, or similar stuff anyway. There appears to be nothing on the market specifically designed for the roofs EXCEPT for jute type material or lining carpet which is even more expensive.

What is Derek using Axminster Look at the stuff the custom guys use for there sound systems to stop the resonation brilliant stuff and cheap.

?? A lot of people in the VW world DO use carpet yes, and in the land Rover world too - often used on the roofs to stop condensation when used as a daily driver as there is no head linings on the series landies - so axminster would be fine! Though a little heavy, you'd need good glue .

Where, Lee, is all this super cheap insulating material? Double foil bubble insulation, as in the link, would cost only about 18 quid for the whole roof, is 4-5mm thick, highly insualting, very very light and totally waterproof.

Could you send me a link to what the custom chaps use? I can't find it!

Thanks Neil, yes I have seen some of these - and some of them are good for certain areas of the car, even the roof in some instances - but for the whole car all are quite expensive, in comparison to foiled bubble wrap anyway lol, that is my point to Irmscher - he criticised a product that only cost 18 quid for the whole car... I'm still waiting for his link to something that is as good but as cheap / cheaper...

I have not used it, but I see no reason why not. I wonder if you could get a sample first?

I didnt critiscise Mathew Go to one of the car audio shops in Stockport one that does boot installs they have loads of off cuts and full pieces of sound deadening products .The Minor lends itself to piecing so is easy and can be covered i have done mine this way for £10 and under the dash etc .

Thanks everybody for your advice - I have purchased two rolls of aluminium backed flashing for various panels, plus a pile of insulation off ebay which was linked to on here...

BUT back to my original question on felt / bitumen sound proofing / insulation... the answer came back that the 'hard 'side goes against the metal... but having gone back thorugh various books and looked at what is left of the original stuff behind the dash of two minors it seems that the felt side is against the bulkhead from the factory?

I'm confused?

That is when it is non bitumen backed.

Ahh... what is it backed with then... it sort of feels bitumany.. ish.. lol
