Tyres

Post by yiorgos »

Hello everyone

I'm from Cyprus and i have a big proplem finding new tyres 145/14R or 155/14R for my Morris 1000 56' model.
Someone suggested the 165/70R instead.
I want to know if it's ok to put them on and if the car can take them and if it will be safe.

thank you

If it's still got standard wheels (which is likely) then I wouldn't recommend it, the wheel is too narrow. I've got 155/14 on mine which is a bit wider than ideal on the standard wheel, but running slightly higher pressure seems to stop them feeling too 'wobbly'.

145/14 is now readily available in the UK again from Minor specialists but I imagine the shipping costs would be a problem. Somewhere like Longstone Tyres http://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/ might be able to help - I've never used them, but their website looks to be aimed at European customers as well as just UK.

Yes -165 x 70 is really too wide for the standard wheels. May be a good time to upgrade to wider wheels!

I've been looking at new tyres and there's quite a price difference between the 145's and the 155's - you can get 155's for 22ish each and the 145's are 42ish each - that's quite a gap if you're buying 4.

Anyone else running 155s happily on the standard rims ? it's not my daily drive.

I've been running 155s for the last 10 years. (Blimey... ten years of Minor ownership...)

Anyhow, Phyllis seems to handle well enough on them, although I do wonder that they look a little 'fat' and 'squashy'. Still, I've really had no trouble with them; the only reason to change for 145s in my view would be to improve the looks of the car. I run the 155s at around 26-28psi.

Bull Motif stock both sizes - I had mine from there last time and took them to my local tyre place for fitting. I didn't realise there was such a price differential, although 145 is a fairly obscure size now.
Happy Minoring!

I have been running 155x14s on my Series MM for over 30 years with no problems, mostly without inner tubes. Goodyear Grand Prix, Firestone F60s, Nankang - no good on 155x14s but seem ok on 175x13s on my Traveller.

Juat bought 2 155x14x80 Toyo's from Black Circles. When you consider the valve, fitting etc - reasonable price. Can get them cheaper if a drive 60 mile round trip but not really worth the effort or the fuel. I have no problem with the 155s running at 30psi. Have tried lowering the pressure but 30psi seems a good compromise. I would imagine shipping tyres is expensive to Cyprus but ask BM for a quote including shipping.
