Having read the previous thread about the problems with the temp' gauge, what is the consensus of opinion regards the gauge and sender being compatible, ie could you take any old gauge from any old car and use it with any old sender that will fit the moggy engine, or would I have to buy both as a compatible unit.
as far as i know there are really only 2 types of sender that fit A-series engines.
most expect the standard 10v supply, a few rarer ones expect a 12v supply (early minis had this), they will all work after a fashion just that the 'normal' point on your gauge may be shifted slightly to one side.

Having read the previous thread about the problems with the temp' gauge,
The biggest problem is caused by them not being wired in correctly via the voltage reulator at the back of the speedo or putting one of the modern in line ones.

At the back of my speedo there seems to be a voltage stabiliser but there are no wires connected to it. The only wires are the ones that go to the petrol gauge and from it. So I bought a stabiliser from maplins and wired it accordingly, and now the temp' always reads hot after about 5 mins running so I was wondering if it could be the wrong sender unit as I just popped to my local motor shop and bought one, which brings me to the thought that it could be the wrong one. The other thing is could I run a wire to the square (stabiliser) box from wherever on the back of the speedo to use that instead of the stabiliser I bought from maplins. At sometime in the past someone has changed the engine and wired things differently, and I am just finding them as I go along.
opinions welcomed with thanks.
