I'm cleaning the floor of the car to fit new carpet.
I don't know what adhesive they used in '52 but it's now like a thick, hard tar.
Most of the carpet lifts away leaving a sticky 'hairy' tar. Some is brittle and can be eased off but the rest........
Any ideas please?
White spirit?

oooh er...... I haven't got a heat gun... no power in the garage either. Although I guess they run on other fuel --- doh ---MoggyTech wrote:Might be bitumin type underseal, heat gun and scraper might shift it.

I bet you are right about the bitumin type underseal. Would smell lovely with a heat gun

Would it be safe to heat it with the 'hairy' fibres of carpet still there?
Thanks.

I was tempted to leave it then I remembered those annoying words:DaveC wrote:I would be inclined to leave it, but I would think that lighter fuel, white spirit, petrol or thinners would take it off. Be careful though!
preparation is everything
I will be careful, thanks. A bit of a soak in white spirit and see what happens.
