Removing adhesive

I'm cleaning the floor of the car to fit new carpet.

I don't know what adhesive they used in '52 but it's now like a thick, hard tar.

Most of the carpet lifts away leaving a sticky 'hairy' tar. Some is brittle and can be eased off but the rest........

Any ideas please?

White spirit?

Might be bitumin type underseal, heat gun and scraper might shift it.

I would be inclined to leave it, but I would think that lighter fuel, white spirit, petrol or thinners would take it off. Be careful though!

oooh er...... I haven't got a heat gun... no power in the garage either. Although I guess they run on other fuel --- doh ---

I bet you are right about the bitumin type underseal. Would smell lovely with a heat gun

Would it be safe to heat it with the 'hairy' fibres of carpet still there?

I was tempted to leave it then I remembered those annoying words:

preparation is everything

I will be careful, thanks. A bit of a soak in white spirit and see what happens.
