Changing Taxation Class?

I've just found out my pickup hasn't been on the road for a long time, *and* hasn't been changed to historic status. I know it's quite a simple job, but can't actually find how it's done on the DVLA (or Evil Portal as I now call it as it all seems to have changed to directgov or something) website.

I'm really hoping the pickup is pretty much done and ready for the test by the end of next week, so the sooner I can sort this out the better!

I was in the same situation recently. I got Albert MOT'd, drove my other car to the local DVLA office and with all the doccumentation they gave me a relevant tax disc and sent the V5c off to Swansea to be changed to 'historic vehicle'.

I'm still waiting for the V5 to drop through my letterbox (I say still, it's only a few days since I managed to finally track the paperwork down for this one), so not sure what the process would be there? It would probably help if I could find the little green slip, which has danced off with teh spanners, odd sized and much needed screws, and various other things for this project that have decided they want to live in a land far far away...

I can't remember how to do it by post, but if you've got a DVLA office near by just pop in with the V5 when you get it and say "hi, I'd like to change the taxation class to 'historic'", and it shall magically happen.

you can't change the class (in person or by post) until you are ready to tax it, so you need to have MOT, insurance and existing V5 ready to do it - If you are lucky the DVLA local office is much nearer than mine is!!
If you do it by post you can waste 1 to 3 weeks MOT and insurance waiting for the docs to come back while you are unable to drive.
