right finally got the latest project running nearly finished by the way
it ran fine for a while about 5 mins then hunted and played up seems to run fast no mattter what i do
also the fuel gauge went to empty and the heater stopped working.
i've fiddled with the wires and made sure they were all on ok
seems strange as my dynamo light is permanetly on also but new battery seems to hold charge ok
bafflin me

any ideas

What model and year is the car?
Sounds like a combination of faults to me, and not just electrical.
Fuel guage going to empty, could be empty tank, sender unit, voltage stabiliser on speedo.
Hunting and running fast, timing and carb/mixture setup.
Dynamo light always on, incorrect wiring to regulator box, or faulty regulator box.
Heater not working (do you mean the heater fan?) check multiple earth wires that go to the wiper switch (assuming it's a later model car)

its a 68
the fan motor yes
it did work until the car was running for a few minutes same as the fuel gauge
and yes there's petrol in it

Stick a volt meter on it to check for charging - should read 13.8/14.2 volts. If only 12 volts or so - then not charging, which seems likely with the light being on. Start by checking connections - and have a look at the dynamo brushes. If all ok - try a little jumper wire joining the two terminals on the dynamo - if it then gives nice high volts it's working ok - fault must be with wiring/connections/regulator. heater and gauge - fuse must have blown or oxidised connections at the fuse.

i reckon it could be the regulator or the voltage stabilizer
because i started it up and heater and gauge worked for about 30 secs then they both stopped working
left it for 10 mins or so and did it again 30 secs of running and they both stopped working again.
very strange

never had this before lol

well i put a volt meter on it and it was reading 1.3
turned the revs up a bit more and 1.7
me thinks there's a problem lol
at least it's running right now.
checked timing ok
turned out to be throttle linkage filthy dirty and not going back properly and a dirty dash pot piston too.
good clean up and woo hoo lovely tick over even with a hot rod exhaust
it'll sound nice when i get the new one on lol
also sorted out the wiring prob it was the fan had been wired into the voltage regulator so overworking it after a few minutes.
re-wired and checked everything and hey presto fuel gauge reading nearly half (should be about right) and heater blowing nicely
isn't it lovely when you figure out whats wrong

and mend it

I recon all new drivers should drive around in a car that over 30 years old becos it sure as ell teaches you a thing or 2 keepin them runnin not like todays cars- press imobiliser, open door put key start car, car wont start call out the breakdown man, breakdown man scratches head and he say me take you to your nearest dealer (no not drugs, although that might not be a bad idea

) and itch a ride to garage, get bus back home arange a loan to pay garage repair bil ask garage man about fault he say engin management sistom fault ( in other words h did not know but changed it anyway). Next step go to night school learn how to talk properly
