BRAKE SERVO KIT

Post by clivedackus »

Hi
Can anyone please email me a copy of the instructions for the Lockheed Brake Servo Kit that seems to be a common upgrade?

Cheers

Dunno about 'instruction' - but the servo should be mounted slightly 'nose up', and if you want to servo ALL the brakes you will need to blank off the existing port leading from the master cylinder to the rear brakes, insert the servo in the line going to the front brakes and add a T to take a new line (after the servo) back to joint the pipe feeding the rear brakes !
You should note that a servo doesn't make the existing brakes any better - it just reduces the leg load.

Some think it improves the brakes - it don't!

Just thought I'd mention a bitch of a fault to find if you ever work on a Minor with poor rear brakes that has a servo fitted.

If the fitter has used a Servo Check Valve in the vacuum line to the servo, make sure it's installed the correct way!

If you ever read this 'Scot' I forgive you...

Excuse my ignorance but is it advisable to 'servo' the rears too. I never really thought about it tbh, just assumed it was the fronts that were servo'd.
What would Macgyver do..?

The choice is yours - bit more work to add in the rears, and then there is the question of whether that will allow you to apply full pressure to the front brakes before the rears lock up!! Ideally - I suggest all 4 should be servo-ed, and an adjustable pressure limiting valve fitted in the line to the rear brakes. This will allow fine tuning to get it just right.

I'd advise assistance to both front and rear. Although I'm not a great fan of servo'd drums at all. No need for a balance valve as they operate perfectly well without one. The extra plumbing is only the addition of another 3 way.

And plug off the feed at the back of the master cylinder (poor access!) , and add a length of pipe to pick up with the pipe running to the rear brakes.

Yup, I'd go along with that too. Simply cut a larger access hole for the rear fitting on the m/c.

Perfectly okay BM. We always ask customers first about removing around 20mm more of the m/c cut out but most realise the benefits and it is still hidden beneath the cover plate. :D

Or blank the rear outlet while the M/C's out of the car having the top hat valve removed ;)

Ah but this was just a servo Q - no mention of different brake design!

Well yes, discs did get 'added in' - but that was not the main point! Anyway - it's all clear now and I haven't mentioned the ..........

Thats getting far too modern!

I know my old Fiesta used to have valves under the boot area so the brake efficiency was 'supposedly' automatically varied depending on what load you were carrying.
Perhaps the same could be done with the Minor?
