Hi there, I need a bit of advice on the heat sheild on my '56 splitty. I took it off as it produced four nice rust holes where it was bolted to the floor and consequently I had to have a plate welded in, therefore is it really neccesary to have one or would I be risking a fire ?. Your comments would be most welcome.

I haven't got one in my car, a '55 splitscreen. It does mean you have a heated floor!

All cars SHOULD have one. I think the early ones are slightly longer than the late ones.

PERSONALLY I would think you'd be OK without one, but I'd be very tempted to repair the floor and fit a new one. Most of the cars I have come across have one fitted and it's lasted 30/40/50 years. I think you just might have been unlucky.

NONE of mine have had one. I didn't realise that there should be one until I was peering under one at last year's rally :D Maybe one of these days I'll fit one... :D
Just remembered - it was someone driving past with one falling off that showed me :D

Can you still get one then? If so, what are they made of? Surely not asbestos?

Cam, you are right, the early cars have bigger shields
