Great success! If there was silt in there - the filter in the pump will likely be well clogged with it too!

It was actually my dads suggestion. I was convinced it was going to be the sticking advance and I was a bit stumped when it wasn't.
The muck of ages was in the float bowl and must have been disturbed when the carb lived in a box while I rebuilt the engine.
As I've tested the operation of the pump and it's quite new I'm going with the theory that that larger bits of "stuff" will have been in the earlier pumps filter.
