Any suggestions for how to plumb the water side in? I guess it needs cool water from the bottom of the rad, but how do you get it to circulate??

You would like the best flow possible...

IF you were to plumb it straight into the rad (have a fixing made in top and bottom tank) it would not circulate as much.

So it needs to be somewhere in the system.

Bottom of the rad is the hottest (as that is where the hot water out of the engine goes)

What if you have a takeoff on the rubber hose on the thermostat housing, and somehow guide the other one into the heater return (being copper, relatively easy to alter)?

Just thinking out loud.

I don't think so. The hot water comes out of the top of the cylinder head into the top of the radiator, cools and descends to the bottom of the radiator, then the cooler water is sucked out of the bottom of the radiator and pumped into the engine block water jacket, where it gets heated up and rises back to the top of the cylinder block...

Are you sure about that?

It would seem to counteract the natural thermosyphon effect if nothing else!

How does that work in a radiator then? I am of course fully aware that hot water rises.

I used to make radiators, and I know that there are no baffles in the rad to make the water go a certain way.

I can't remember at the moment, not for sure, but my MM has an outlet at the side, and the inlet at the top, a thermo syphon.

If the water goes in at the bottom, trying to get up(as heat goes up). It going up thorugh the radiator makes it cool down, thus getting cooler water near the inlet at the top of the radiator?

I am a tad confused now

FYI a sidevalve engine. Just imagine that there is no newfangled thermostat at the top :D

On a side valve no pump system especailly, the thermosyphon works like this:

Hot water, being less dense, rises. It exits the top of the engine (or highest point) into the rad. There it cools, becoming more dense, and sinks.

As the system is closed the rising and sinking cause a current/ pumping effect, so the hot water travelling up/ out pushes the cool water in through the bottom hose, as well as sucking it up through the engine.

A system with a pump will add to this effect by pumping with the natural flow.

It's basically just a convection current if you think about it, just the up is in one section and the down is in another :)

The radiator cools the water and as it gets cooler and denser it falls to the bottom, comes out of the bottom radiator hose and flows into the bottom of the engine block. The engine heats the water and as it gets hotter and lighter it rises through the water galleries, comes out of the cylinder head and flows into the top of the radiator.

My fault then. I always though the water came past the thermostat first, not last...
