HiF 44 SU carb question

Post by bmcecosse »

Does the mixture screw go IN to weaken the mix, or OUT ?? Does it actually wind the jet up and down just like the traditional old carb ?

Used to run with one of those on my old 1275GT a few years back. IIRC, screw it in to richen it, and out to lean it off.

I can't remember off the top of my head which way is what, but yes, it does still move the jet up and down :)

Yes, the jet does move up and down like the 'traditional' type so you can figure it out from there but from memory I agree, I think screwing in (clockwise) richens and screwing out (anti-clockwise) leans.

Just checked my Metro Haynes, and yep, the above (in for rich, out for weak) is spot on :)

Thanks lads - indeed I have since read my Metro Haynes too (best gerabox build description of any Haynes in there!) and indeed it is in for rich and out for weak. Anyone got any suggestions for a needle to use on a reasonably well modified 1275 with this carb ?

BDK for a stage 1 1275, BDL if it's a bit wilder.

There is a website out there somewhere that lists them all, and what they're used in/for, but I'm buggered if I can find it now. :(

I think it may be WINSU you are thinking of. The car runs well at the moment using the BEJ needle the carb came with - and yes the BDL is the standard MG Metro needle - much the same profile to half way and then it goes much richer. I may just experiment with the leccy drill, wet and dry paper and a micrometer !

Yes they will sell all the parts - but I am a miserable Scotsman who spends not a single penny unless forced to at gun point !
