Front 'knock' on braking

Post by dunketh »

Whenever I apply the brakes to stop the car I get a clonk noise from the front passenger hub area.
It happens whether reversing or driving normally - although its more evident when reversing out of my drive, and stopping at the bottom.

Is it just a dodgy bush somewhere?

is it just one clonk or do you get repeated ones as long as the brakes are applied?

It is usually suspension bushes (including the eyebolt, tie bar, top trunnion etc..)
but could be something more sinister like loose backplate, dodgy hub etc..
It can also be fairly unrelated (exhaust coming close to bodywork etc..

Just one clonk, but its definately a 'clonk'.
Sounds like somethings loose and is giving a little just as the brakes bite fully.

I'll have a poke around with a big screwdriver but to be honest I don't know how much slack there's supposed to be in the suspension area as standard.

I've had one of those!

Those nice guys at ESM finally sorted it - turned out to be the "pivot pin" that goes through the eyebolt had a couple of flats worn on it......

I think it's one of those slow jobs - take everything apart and check for condition until you find it.....

Then, order up the new bit(s) and re-assemble....

Good luck,

Colin

What would a repeated cloking indicate, out of interest? It sounds a bit sinister...

Check out the swivel pin threads very carefully - if the lower one is worn it can pull out and the wheel buries itself up inside the wing - 'comforting' thing is it usually happens at relatively low speed.
