Of course you are right but I still believe that what is rightly considered poverty now would have been seen as 'comfortable ' in the '50s. And probably 'well off' half a century before. My point is that although things are still far from perfect,as a society we are improving. We live longer, have better health care,better everything really.
We all enjoy a good grumble and slagging off the powers that be, but overall I think that the forces for good have made progress.
Could this be the demented ravings of dementia?

I'm sure you are correct and not demented at all, but this is a bit of a digression from the original thread on concerns about the DVLA s activities.

Let's just hope the unexpected doesn't include DVLA deciding to cancel the registration of any mog with disc brakes or a later gearbox.

Disc brakes and gearbox changes weren't notifiable I believe. I think they only really wanted to know if you changed the engine.
Unless of course your car had been off road and wasn't registered with them anymore.
And this is where I am given to understand they will now be paying special attention. Although if you tell them of any other changes they may well decide to inspect / award you a Q plate / remove your cars historic status.
It really depends on how draconian it all gets.
Which brings me back to my point that I think allot of people won't contact them about anything unless they have to, so their records for allot of cars may end up even more inaccurate.
You could end up with potential restorers being put off for fear of a Q plate.

And sorry but I don't believe the forces for good triumphed in this country at all, food banks, excessive immigration, low wages, high prices, greedy self centered politicians (covering up for all the jimmy savilles in their midst - no capital letters as his name doesn't deserve them), islamic extremism, domineering EU wanting to dictate to us all the time (how many billion do they leach off us each year again...).........

The problem here is, as Jagnut indicates, few will want a Q plate on their vehicle.
I can forecast MUCH more id swops taking place to avoid the Q re-regn threat - pretty bad as is.

Can spend many months on investigations - getting vehicles legal etc instead of continuing with my book - no real problem with this, BUT being issued with a Q plate is,to my mind,a failure - as if the results of my research isn't 100% - near enough impossible getting vehicle details from owners to help with the pioneering work I do!

To add insult to injury, laptop is on its way out - number overload?!!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

So - can someone advise me on what I should do? I'm expecting to get an MOT sometime next spring for my restoration which has been SORNd for four years. I'll be fitting a 1275 Midget engine, which is of reliable provenance but has lost its ID plate, number unknown. Do I inform them of the change?

If there isn't a number to notify and the engine is externally identical to the original I think you might as well let sleeping dogs lie.

I agree, both with the above and with what POMMreg says about the sad possibility of future ID swapping.

But then if the DVLA want to play this game and penalize the classic car enthusiast for straying even slightly from the path of 100% originality, or simply for rebuilding their car and in doing so using more than a prescribed amount of new metal, then stuff them!

They bring it on themselves.......

Being honest counts for nothing nowadays!

Seems the days of supplying DVLA with a Heritage Certificate and a detailed letter are over - wonder whether it's because they can SELL "age related" regns - society is fast buck and short-term profit making mess.

Looking at it from the other side, its never been easier to build a hotrod/custom whatever, assuming you have a pre 60 V5.

Fit big modern engine, in vestiges of original chassis. In fact why not throw that away and build/buy a new uprated better chassis. Fit replica bodywork - finish off to taste.
Insure with cheap specialist insurance (engineers report saying its safe is easy enough to get if the ins co. wants it). Go down the post office and tax it and you're on the road with a '1930 Model A Ford' or whatever.

I'm not saying the above is a good thing or not, but its emminently possible and makes a bt of a nonsense about proving age of components etc to avoid a Q plate, when if you already have a V5 you can just bypass the system completely...

Basically, a minority may stuff it up for the sensible folk, or have already done so.
Fitting a 1275 into a minor, or disc brakes etc won't be a problem as far as I can see though.
