Alex - that's just NOT SO! SUs are extremely efficient at passing air - the 'Weber' types tend to have another secondary 'choke' in the air stream - the SU is extremely clean when running on full throttle with the piston fully raised and only the needle and the throttle plate in the airstream. And of course if the advice of Mr Vizard is followed, the flow can be maximised quite easily. Webers (etc) are very difficult to set up properly, and chokes/jets/emulsion tubes are incredibly expensive to experiment with!!
To AN - the SU from any later Mini/Metro is ideal. And aluminium inlets are readily available - there is nothing 'magic' about the manifold being made of aluminium - the advantage is that by using a separate inlet manifold, the 'hot spot' with the exhaust manifold is eliminated.
This one will also take the larger 1.75" carb if you look for even more power with say a 1275 engine in future. Expect the price to rise somewhat...
