Hi bmc, can you point me in the right direction of the carb and alloy models that might be best fit for the engine?
I have had a look around but all of them look the same to me and could very well end up ordering the wrong one.

It all depends how much power you want and what your budget is? If lots(for both!) then a nice Weber will always pass more air than an SU but your insurance company might want more money from you!

Alex - that's just NOT SO! SUs are extremely efficient at passing air - the 'Weber' types tend to have another secondary 'choke' in the air stream - the SU is extremely clean when running on full throttle with the piston fully raised and only the needle and the throttle plate in the airstream. And of course if the advice of Mr Vizard is followed, the flow can be maximised quite easily. Webers (etc) are very difficult to set up properly, and chokes/jets/emulsion tubes are incredibly expensive to experiment with!!
To AN - the SU from any later Mini/Metro is ideal. And aluminium inlets are readily available - there is nothing 'magic' about the manifold being made of aluminium - the advantage is that by using a separate inlet manifold, the 'hot spot' with the exhaust manifold is eliminated.
This one will also take the larger 1.75" carb if you look for even more power with say a 1275 engine in future. Expect the price to rise somewhat...

At the moment I am not really worried about the cost too much but also don't want to go OTT, i just want to get the right bits and try to take off as much of the strain on my engine as possible. (might be that I am being a bit paranoid but better safe than sorry, in my book!)
As I go through quite a hilly area I want to make sure it is getting enough air and as efficiently as possible when going up gradients.

Well the first thing is to check if the engine is in good condition - a compression check will tell all. No point upgrading an engine unless it is in good condition... Slightly worrying that they can't spell.... but this should do the job..

That is great! always good to get hold of new things to test the engine.
I checked the timing this weekend and everything seems to firing well, i'll give this tester kit a go and get back on when i find out if he is all good! and if all is well I am guessing it will be a case of buying an inlet like the ones you sent via ebay and then looking for a 1.50" - 1.75" carb?

For a 1098 -you want a 1.5" H4 / HS4 - or an HIF38 - the later/better models. Keep an eye on that manifold! Used to get them for £5 - more like £20 these days....

ok great, i'll keep an eye on it and once i get that and check my compression i'll have a look at the carb.
