MOT WHAT DO THEY LOOK FOR???

Post by LUR759H »

Hi Guys,
Firstly sorry if my english is not so good it is my 3rd language. Im asking about the MOT because i have no idea what to do and what not to do, I am in the process of restoring a 1969 Morris minor traveler. now with the engine removed as i took it out to sort the rust in the engine bay the right side inner wing had many holes in it due to rust.
The BULKHEAD TO TIE PLATE has complexly rotted apart as has the leg which goes from bulk head to engine bay floor, both rear wheel arches will need re-welding and the wood replacing.
One good thing about this car is that the previous owner had replaced all the floor so that saves a big job that almost all mm need to have done.
I have bought many new items on ebay for the car including two new wooden doors, guttering, new stainless exhaust which has been fitted, brake copper pipes, brake drums, rubbers etc etc most have not been fitted yet, this will be a slow build as money is my big issue - i dont have any! however I am getting things done for example this week I have been underneath with a wire brush and black hamerite as a lot of the wax oil had dried out and fallen off the fuel tank had started to rust.
The hamerite was a gift from an old friend who is more passionate than me to get the car running again, as he had many minors as a young lad he is now in his 70s. 5ltr is a lot of paint to get free...
So there you go can anyone help or give me advise, what should I do/not do??

regards

Well - your English looks fine to me - better than many.... :) And you seem dedicated to doing a good job on the Traveller. All you need to know for the MOT is listed here for downloading
http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/

However - basically all the electrics (lights/wipers/horn) need to work 'perfectly'. The brakes need to work really well, steering and suspension all in good condition and of course - no 'perforating' rust anywhere within 300mm of a suspension mounting point - or a seat mounting - or a seat belt mounting. Ideally - there should be no rust anywhere... Lots of other requirements of course - speedo must work (and be illuminated ), all doors must open and close securely, windscreen must be in good order - no cracks/scores/chips within the field of vision and so on. All common sense really. Good luck with it - and don't hesitate to come back with questions.

The inner wings - if 'perforated' (in holes....) will need to be repaired with new panels (or at least patches) welded in. If it's just surface rust and the panel withstands a hit with a hammer - then scrubbing up/rust killing/painting should be fine !
And yes - I have a (rather less than perfect...) Traveller.

If it looks rusty on the outside then it will be worse on the inside. Many of the panels are box sections and trap the water inside.
Do not bother looking for holes around the suspension points, if it looks rusty then dig it out. Woodwork is also structural so is an MOT failure if it has rotted through.
Now if you had bought a 1960 Traveller it would not need an MOT!

Looks like extensive metal replacement required there... And the problem is - with fuel tank and timber in close proximity - they would need removing first.......
