ignition light remains on

Post by Jah »

After a short stop on my journey the battery was flat - I found a lead had come off the alternator (easy to put on). BUT I noticed although the ignition was turned off the ignition light was on. When I turned the key before pulling the starter the ignition light went off but the oil light came on. Usually when I do this both lights come on then go off when stated up. I jumped started car got it home turned ignition off pulled out key and ignition light remained on. The only thing I could do to stop this is removed alternator lead that had previously come off Can anyone give me advice please.

Welcome to the forum! Which wire had come off the alternator? The large or the small? It rather sounds like an alternator fault has developed - possibly caused by running it with the wire disconnected, although I think that would be unusual. With the engine running and the wires connected , even though the light is on - is the alternator charging the battery? It should be showing 13.8 / 14 volts at decent revs.

Thanks,It is the earth (green yellow) wire that had become detached. I have charged battery and it starts when I attach lead. It is just the issue of why does the ignition light remain on after turning off and removing key but go out when I turn ignition on?

There is NO green/yellow wire to the alternator...... That's the oil pressure warning wire.... So I suggest you have the wires connected wrongly - what's connected to the oil pressure switch ?????? I hope you haven't ruined the alternator - it 'should' be ok......fingers crossed !

Unless someone has fitted an alternator using domestic earth wire....
Glad to be back!
