Ahhhh! Your valve is missing the cable attachment. On the most recent ones it looks like a bit of mechano that pivots at the bottom and pushes / pulls that plunger/piston arrangement in and out. The cable attaches there and runs to under the dashboard next to the steering column. This in turn attaches to a little pull-knob which says "Pull Heater", I think.
In my car this has absolutely no effect as the vavle is completely shot and it's permanently on
I expect Cam's got a picture of it; if not, I'll show you next time I come down (or you come here). Either that, or watch Nikki's Heater vid, that's got a shot of the heater valve in it

Looking at your larger picture Andrew It does look like the earlier gate valve as you can see the brass of the body in that picture, so it has got the ealier valve fitted as you said.
Cheers

Yes, I think soCam wrote:The engine number should be stamped on a little plate (riveted to the engine block) just in front of the cylinder head, below spark plug number 1 (nearest the radiator). Is this where you meant??

Phew! Not going barmy just yet then. That's a relief (both not going barmy and spotting the heater valve!) Are they the same fitting into the block? Don't think I can be bothered tracking down the Meccano at the mo, so if I can just swap them over...Kevin wrote:Looking at your larger picture Andrew It does look like the earlier gate valve as you can see the brass of the body in that picture, so it has got the ealier valve fitted as you said.

GARETH.. I didn't suggest that the engine was from a Riley and
they never used a transverse engine EVER, (until the arrival of the Riley
Mini ) but I think you are probably
correct in thinking that it is a factory recon engine. LYNDA, What colour is it??

Sorry, what I was getting at was: is it possible that a transverse Riley Elf (Mini) Kestrel (1100 and 1300) engine could have been modified to fit the Minor.
Judging by the pictures, it looks green, but then what colour it was when it came out of the factory may have been very different...

engine colour
Well, if it was painted whilst in the car you could try using a
torch and a mirror to see what colour the block is at the rear,
facing the gearbox. If it is silver or gold then you have a recon
engine with a factory number. somebody on here must have
a gold or silver seal engine? What are the prefixes to the number?

engine number
57.....I don't know, the fact that your recon engine has a number
which doesn't relate in any way to the 'normal' numbers suggests
theat Lyndas' is in the same category??

Mystery solved (well mostly). It is a 1098 engine, and also has a 1098 gearbox attached! As for the engine number.... well I still don't know why it's so odd, but at least I know what engine my car's got now.
The heater works too. The specialist just turned the knob inside the car a bit further than we had done.
Still, at least it's a nice cheap fix.

I am not sure if this has been mentioned already but...
if you look on the left hand side of the engine block (the same side as the exhaust manifold), near to the front there should either be a small plate with the engine capacity on it or the engine capacity marked on the block itself, as typically 950 or 1100.
Can you see anything similar on this engine?

No, mine didn't have either. Apparently the absence of the 950 mark meant that it is a 1098, even though it didn't have 1100 on it.newagetraveller wrote:if you look on the left hand side of the engine block (the same side as the exhaust manifold), near to the front there should either be a small plate with the engine capacity on it or the engine capacity marked on the block itself, as typically 950 or 1100.
