Hello, My right hand wheel had developed a clunking noise when I go over small bumps, could any of you tell me what it could be and how to resolve it. I have tightened the wheel nuts and it still happens. Is the car safe to drive ?
Thanks

Re: Clunking noise
Highly likely that the bottom trunnion is desperately loose on the kingpin - and is about to part company with it - allowing the wheel to buckle under the car.... I would VERY urgently examine it - and everything else on the front suspension - including the tightness of the 4 bolts holding the front damper in place on the crossmember - inside the engine compartment.

Re: Clunking noise
It turns out it was a simple job, as you said it was the 4 bolts that hold the dampers on in the engine bay. I got about 5 full turns out of each bolt. Tightened them up and problem cured.
Thanks for the advice

Re: Clunking noise
Now grease the trunnions to avoid the other possible problem bmc mentioned.
Re: Clunking noise
Hmmmmm - 5 full turns , or 5 flats? If really was 5 full turns I would be concerned about the bolts - and very tempted to fit a full new set of bolts..........
