Re: Lead replacement
Actually Dennis - if you really are doing that sort of mileage, you may be one of the very few who would benefit from an unleaded head. But if so far the gaps are not closing up significantly, don't bother!

Re: Lead replacement
Sell it to someone with the unleaded jitters then! Mine is also thrashed mercilessly around the same sort of mileage/week, and (slapped wrists) I haven't even checked the valve gaps since.....oh, I don't know when!aupickup wrote:i do between 300 and 400 miles a week in the moggie

(Just getting my well worn dunces hat on to go to and sit on the naughty step for what my quasi-fashionable Wife would refer to as "time-out")
PS: are there any grease points on a Moggy?

Hi bmcbmcecosse wrote:There is absolutely NO need to use any 'snake oil' fluids........the engine will run for many many many many thousands of miles without any worries. But - do check the valve gaps, and set the exhausts to 15 thou (inlets 12 thou) - and check/reset them every 3000 miles. Only caveat is if doing many many hard motorway miles - and then you should really fit an unleaded head (and still set gaps as earlier!). No need for this to be expensive - the 998 Mini head is supposedly 'unleaded' in all later engines and entirely suitable for 948 engines and cheap as chips to buy. And 1098 engines can either use that same head with slight loss of power (but actually it may give better economy) - or upgrade to an unleaded 12G940 head from a 1275 engine. And obviously - any 1275 can simply use the unleaded head from a later engine.
The Haines Manual says to set the exhaust and inlet gap at 12 thou not 15 and 12 thou?
Thanks Tomas

I always thought that was because of the phrase "refitting is the opposite to removal"bmcecosse wrote:Yea - Haynes is ALWAYS right - that's why the Mini lads call it HBOL - Haynes Book of Lies...... Do it that way if you think Haynes know better......![]()
