coil wires
on the new coil i bought there is a plus and minus sign instead of the letters. what colour wires go where any help much welcome thanks
Re: coil wires
Depends on whether your car is +ve or -ve earth! The white wire is the feed from the battery, the black and white wire comes from the points, and is thus the earth.

Re: coil wires
because i was told it was one of the reasons my points were melting

Re: coil wires
It's 'never' the coil.......... We can't tell you how to connect the wires since you still haven't told us if the car is -ve or +ve earth........

Re: coil wires
I bet that if you connect the coil feed wire to the points they'll melt!

Re: coil wires
Indeed they will - and somehow that's the coil's fault???????????????????????????????????

Re: coil wires
are you saying ive got the wires on wrong the white lead is to the + on the coilMarkyB wrote:I bet that if you connect the coil feed wire to the points they'll melt!
Re: coil wires
That should be correct - white to +ve on coil, and white/black on -ve on coil and on the terminal on the dizzy. But was it always arranged so?

Re: coil wires
there were no coil wires .i had to rewire the carbmcecosse wrote:That should be correct - white to +ve on coil, and white/black on -ve on coil and on the terminal on the dizzy. But was it always arranged so?

Re: coil wires
should i use a tester on the two wires to check which is livegwyndav310 wrote:there were no coil wires .i had to rewire the carbmcecosse wrote:That should be correct - white to +ve on coil, and white/black on -ve on coil and on the terminal on the dizzy. But was it always arranged so?

Re: coil wires
I'm saying that if you connect a 12 volt wire to the points they will melt.are you saying I've got the wires on wrong the white lead is to the + on the coil
12 volts goes to one side of the coil, and the wire from the other side of the coil goes to the points.

Re: coil wires
ill check the wires and see which one is liveMarkyB wrote:I'm saying that if you connect a 12 volt wire to the points they will melt.are you saying I've got the wires on wrong the white lead is to the + on the coil
12 volts goes to one side of the coil, and the wire from the other side of the coil goes to the points.
Re: coil wires
The white wire is 'live'......the white/black wire is the connection from coil to dizzy - where it is earthed by the points when they are closed. But the impedance of the coil (~ 3.2 ohms) normally limits the current flow. When the points are open, 12 volts will be shown at both connections on the coil...........

Re: coil wires
so could it be a faulty coil giving to much voltagebmcecosse wrote:The white wire is 'live'......the white/black wire is the connection from coil to dizzy - where it is earthed by the points when they are closed. Re: coil wires
It 'could' be - have you measured the impedance ? It may be a coil intended for a ballast ignition system ?
