Depends on whether your car is +ve or -ve earth! The white wire is the feed from the battery, the black and white wire comes from the points, and is thus the earth.

It's 'never' the coil.......... We can't tell you how to connect the wires since you still haven't told us if the car is -ve or +ve earth........

I bet that if you connect the coil feed wire to the points they'll melt!

That should be correct - white to +ve on coil, and white/black on -ve on coil and on the terminal on the dizzy. But was it always arranged so?

I'm saying that if you connect a 12 volt wire to the points they will melt.
12 volts goes to one side of the coil, and the wire from the other side of the coil goes to the points.

ill check the wires and see which one is live

The white wire is 'live'......the white/black wire is the connection from coil to dizzy - where it is earthed by the points when they are closed. But the impedance of the coil (~ 3.2 ohms) normally limits the current flow. When the points are open, 12 volts will be shown at both connections on the coil...........

so could it be a faulty coil giving to much voltage

It 'could' be - have you measured the impedance ? It may be a coil intended for a ballast ignition system ?
