hi there. just a quick one. i was looking at newish vespas today and the wheels. they look like they don't have any lacquer on. just this matt silver paint. is that true or would they definitely have been lacquered?

Cheers. I thought the same looking at them when I pass them sometimes. I think it might be some sort of epoxy/etch mix, strong modern paint without clear lacquer top coat.

the replacement with tubeless tyres have a kind of rough teflon matt finish,in black.I'm thinking of getting some ,as they are much safer when punctured ,but they cost a fortune as you need new tyres as well, and there is no recession in scooter parts prices

Very nice :D. I do love the 'flat tracker' look, plus the sound of a nice twin.

I'm not sure it's true that scooterists and motorcyclists don't mix. Quite a few of the scooter people I know also have big bikes. I've also noticed one or two giving up the big bikes but keeping the scooters as they get older.

With regard to plastic Lambrettas mentioned above, I have mixed feelings. On the whole I think it's better something exists than not. There's been talk of Lambrettas coming back into production since ...well since they went out of production.

In a similar vein, and I probably mentioned this before but you can still get the PX 125 Vespa from Piaggio and something almost identical from LML for a lot less money. To get around Euro emissions legislation LML tinkered (restricted) with their 2 stroke engine to keep it viable. Arguably this forced Piaggio to dust off their presses and bring the PX back into production. LML have gone a step further and produced a new, geared 4 stroke engine in 125cc and 200cc variants. Rumour has it they are also going to bring back into production the small frame PK Vespa but a 4 stroke twist and go.

I also am not sure it's true that scooterists and motorcyclists don't mix.
A very good friend of mine, we both started school together at 5 years old in 1955, went down different paths, me on bikes and him on scooters, but stayed good mates with a good bit of banter.
On the 28th of this month a load of us “last of the summer wine type bikers” are having one of our 6 monthly meeting in the pub we started drinking in around 1968ish and Ken my scooter friend will still joining us as usual
Sorry for rambling but as my dad said, “one mans meat is another mans poison”

it's hard to beat the nostalgic memories stirred by the smell and taste of a nicely tuned lammy or vespa, you can even get strawberry smelling 2stroke oil.

on August 12th this year go to matlock bath in derbyshire to see around 400 scooters beating the bikers to their usual parking spaces :D they take it in extremely good humour,we even talk to each other :)

some fantastic bikes on display
