Fuel injection for A-series

Hi All

Just daydreaming. I know that some markets (not here in Oz) had late model classic Minis or Metros with fuel injection (I'm not referring to the Turbo A series).

I can't recall seeing any discussion of retrofitting the injection gear to say a 1098 or 1275 Minor.

Presumably someone has done it. Is it a good mod?

I did a very quick search of the forum, and couldn't see much.

Fuel injection replaced carbs mainly because the fuel could be metered more accurately giving lower emissions. I would not think that the performance benefit would warrant the expenditure for a private person to install fuel injection.

If you are hell bent on injection there will be companies out there that specialise in conversions but they are usually race specialists who will map the brain on a rolling road and set up all the sensors etc - you are talking a fair chunk of money I bet.

I would guess that you need to change the cylinder head first for one with four separate intakes to get any performance benefit from injection. Anything is possible but I wouldn't think the 1098 engine is robust enough for extended developement.

In terms of the UK market, there were two types of injection fitted to the A-Series engine - the single point and twin point systems. The single point system was fitted to some (but not all) Minis from about 1991-96. After that all Minis had the twin point system. A-Series metros were never injected and moved over to the K-Series engine in 1990 - initially some carbed, some injected, but after about 1995ish all were injected.

The consensus seems to be that the Mini injection systems don't give any significant benefit over and above a carb, save for emissions. Not sure about fuel economy though?

Probably best to go for a custom system like megasquirt, particularly if the Mini injection bits aren't readily available to you. That said, I would be very interested to see the results of someone fitting one of the Rover systems to a Minor!

As above - you could fit the Mini system, but may Mini owners are hell-bent on swapping from injection back to carb - for good reason! The last of the Works Minis used the 8 port head with fuel injection - it worked well but not inexpensive,,,,,,,,,
