Almond Green Paint Mis-match

Post by mmJon »

Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of carrying out paintwork repairs to my 1969 Morris Minor Saloon. I have been told that the colour of the original car was Almond Green - paint code GN37. Upon receiving matched coded paint from the supplier (STD) (MAC 5 BLGN37 Almond Green) Make: BLMC - Rover Group, I sprayed a small area on the front wings of the car and it appears that it is a completely different shade of green.

I have attached a picture of the N/S front wing which has had a partial repair made to it. The original colour is at the front of the wing and the repair at the rear.

Before I purchased this car it looked like it had a new front end respray and the paintwork appeared to have been recently applied. This respray was a very close match to the rest of the car. Please can anyone help me sort out the mis-match of paint?

Regards,

I hate to say it but to me, the section you have sprayed (i.e. the rear of the front wing) looks nearer to the original Almond Green than the front end. Perhaps a previous owner has resprayed it a slightly different shade to the original?

Agreed - the new paint you've used looks right to me - same as my Almond Green traveller. The front of the wing doesn't look the right shade.

The best bet will be to find your local motor paint shop, they will be able to do a colour match with the car and mix you up some paint to the exact current shade, whatever that may be.

Thanks everybody for your help.

I will take the car down to a local bodyshop soon, to see if they can get a match.

I am in the middle of doing my almond green 69 four door which has been resprayed at some time a while ago by the conditon of the rest of the car and it looks the same shade as your car before your blow in, bought some rattle cans in almond green and they are a totally different shade to the car

This is the trouble faced when respraying. Someone in the past has had it resprayed in a colour "near enough". I had an Almond Green that the previous owner had resprayed with a VW green :o He never thought to order a rattle can to keep the car the same shade. If you are lucky and the rest of the car's paint is sound taking it to a paint shop with a computer id system may help. They can analyse a small flake of paint and work out what colour it is. :D

I too have an almond green paint mis-match problem. Despite using a firm with expert technology to match the paint for my new rear bumper valance, it is clearly different - see pictures. I rather like the new shiny sheen of the new almond green compared with the very flat looking original. I have to decide:

1. Do I re-paint the bumper valance using almond green from a different supplier; or
2. Do I re-spray the rest of the car using my new shiny almond green paint?[frame]Image[/frame]

No one can can get the same shade on that colour, despite using the same code. Every can or mix I've had has been different. I've got every shade there is! :D

The back of the wing looks like Empire Green GN22 (1952-6) which has a blueish tinge compared to Almond Green
