Three spoke steering wheel, which way up?
Hi,
Probably the daftest question today but here's why; my 1960 car has this wheel, but when the wheel is fitted as I think it should be, with the single spoke down, the horn-push badge is upside down.... so either the wheel fits with the spoke straight up rather than down, or my badge is upside down! The badge is a capital M in a clear plastic hornpush, are there variants of these?
Thanks
Dave

Hello Dave,
while the majority of three spoked wheels are fitted with the single spoke down, some are not, particularly if the angle between the spokes is equal rather than two segments with one much broader segment. Try it and if you are happy that's fine. You'll be in good company as that is how Aston Martin fitted their wheels to the DB 5 and others.

Thanks Alec,
I was wondering how they came 'factory fresh' as the handbook has spoke down but if I fitted mine that way the hornpush motif is the wrong way up!

Spoke upwards because you can't get your hands into the glovebox if the spoke is downwards - the sideways ones are in the way when driving straight ahead

Single spoke up unless someone knows a method of turning the horn badge around. I prefer my MM with the single spoke down, plain horn push, and I can rest my thumbs on the spokes and read the instruments behind the wheel.

On my '58 the spoke has to be down because of the fitment on the centre badge.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

So it seems that Morris produced badges with the screw post on the horn push at the top AND at the bottom..... As they are rivetted together I'd be surprised if they are 'user modifications'
How strange!

Re: Three spoke steering wheel, which way up?
I have an older spoked wheel spare can I fit it to a later 1098 (66). The steering wheel looks as if it will fit but I dont know what to do about the horn push as it is completely different to the 1098 version and the spoked wheel didnt have one when I obtained it.
Re: Three spoke steering wheel, which way up?
The wheel will fit Bill as the splines are the same. You will have to search ebay or post a wanted on here for the early horn push centre like Declan's above....

Re: Three spoke steering wheel, which way up?
Definitely single spoke up - If you crash and the bakerlight shatters then you want the spokes to be missing you! Admittedly this assumes that you are steering straight when you crash!

Re: Three spoke steering wheel, which way up?
I would be more concerned about where the steering column was going to end up
