new crossmember (fully welded?)

Post by john@theforge »

Hi Guys, Doing some welding for a friend on his 2 door, I am going to start with the crossmember but not sure how much welding i need to do. Generally I stick to the fully welded rule with repairs but it doesn't seem sensible to weld right around the crossmember

So basically looking for pics of your new crossmember or advice from the experts.

thanks

I asked similarly recently - and there are lots of replies. But basically - it's spot welded across the tunnel section - through the arch of the tunnel - and then stitch welded on both sides to the floors - and of course pretty much fully welded to the chassis legs where it meets them. Post up some pics as you go along please! I'm still dreading doing this job.

I've luckily never had to do a crossmember myself, however, there is an excellent how to article in the Rob Thommasson club technical manual. Well worth buying if you don't already have this book.

I should hope not, it's current, not the original.

From regalia probably.

Here are the contents;http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?page=347

MMOC members can e-mail, fax, snail-mail or phone MMOC Technical Advisor Rob Thomasson with any technical question for free. See your copy of Minor Matters or Rob's section in the Members Area.

The technical tips manual is available on CD from regalia: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?key=Regalia&id=49

There were some hard copy manuals for sale at the National rally but these were sold quickly and I don't know if there are any more left in stock. Regaliaqueen will be able to advise.

Well I did have a boxful of old stock manuals (Tech Tips in paperback- not workshop) but sold them all. These deal with the maintenace/sevicing of the car - not welding.

I'm not sure that 'technical tips' is the same as the 'technical manual' that chickenjohn was referring to. Lou has advised that 'technical tips' covers maintenance & servicing, not welding, so I'm not sure that the CD will help with your cross member problem. Perhaps chickenjohn can confirm where he got his manual from, and when, or you could contact Rob Thomasson directly?

Not quite right! On page 13:2 of my technical tips manual Rob Thomasson has written an excellent step by step guide to crossmember replacement. There are a few other welding guides in that chapter as well.

EDIT,mine is the Technical manual, 2nd edition. I bought it from the club about 12 years ago!

On the inside it says Welcome to the new Morris Minor technical tips manual. So as far as I know, the technical manual and technical tips manual and the CD (I also bought the CD) are one and the same, possibly just updates of each other with new articles added.

Update.... In the end it turned out to need a full new floor, sills and rear wheel arches. Plus to many little bits to count at the moment.

Given I am fully welding the floors I will fully weld the crossmember as well. Should keep a bit better with all the damp traps filled up.
