Hi

Looks like its had a patch over it.

If its been welded to sound metal at the edges and no big lumps of filler then I would leave it. If its not been done well - just cut out all the rusty bits and weld in a plate or two. It does look a bit scabby compared with the other side.

I've got exactly this section taken apart at the moment, see here for some pictures: http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?name=P ... c&start=15

It's pretty fiddly, because of the hard to get at welding. Mine was trashed at the base & it seems like a pretty important section to me.

There is a smaller plate that goes over the leg of the diamond shaped panel with the big hole in it - I don't know if this is standard, but most cars seem to have it, I don't know how important it is.

Havent posted anything on my project in so long!

Have had a lot of other things to be getting on with so the pickup has taken a back seat. Had to change the clutch on my current car and have had a lot of exams. But now that ive finished work can press on!


All the suspension nuts, bolts and bushes have been changed on both sides, aswell as a new bumper mounting post being welded in the bay, all suspension components painted, inner wings undersealed, and just general tidying.

I will post some pics up a bit later in the week!

Next on the agenda is to weld strengthening strips to the underside of the floor.
Refit the rear axle.
Paint the engine before refitting
Fit new B pillar repairs aswell as boxing plates
New hinge pillars
and new shoes

Only a small list :lol:

Yes it was hired at that time. But in a bid to save money in the long term and increase my tool collection we bought one a few months back! :)

Well to make myself feel better about the pick up i decided to play with the engine.

After taking off the rocker cover you can see that there is years of oil in there.

the same goes for the rocker gear (all sludged up :o )

So i dissembled it, cleaned it, then oiled it and put it back together.

Whilst i had the rocker gear off i took the head off gave it a clean and fitted a new gasket.
Cylinders look good!

I painted the whole thing apart from the sump which i will do at a later date.

Also had a slight hickup

Refitted the rocker assembley as per the haynes and they all look like this:

They are all down for some reason?

And whereas before i did all this i could turn the engine over via the flywheel now i cant! :roll:

And i dont have a crank handle to try it that way? Anyone any ideas what to do. i cant adjust the clearances as it wont turn.

Looks like your rocker adjusters are all screwed right down to the bottom.

The four rocker shaft posts are fitted upside down,
I wouldn't try to turn the engine until this is rectified as you have valve to piston contact which is stoping the engine from turning,

also i notice that two of your core plugs are sticking out and haven't been seated far enough into the block, these should be tapped in further as they won't hold alot of pressure like this and could easily pop out.

that paint stripped rear side looks nice and straight, I'm enviouse, mine look like they've come back from the Eastern Front and have the whole red army march over them.
