Horn/Indicator

Post by RTB »

Some advice please. For the last few weeks the horn has not been working, at last I have found out that the copper connector was not making contact with the steering column. When I push the copper tab back into place? all is fine until I turn the steering wheel then the tabs pops out again. Can someone verify if I am putting the copper tab in the right place, a fine groove below the brass collar, if this is the right place, any clues how to keep the thing there, Mot time is coming up fast.

Thank you

I may be wrong (without removing my steering wheel I can't be sure) But I think there should be a folded over thicker bit on the end of the copper strip that touches a much bigger area of the copper ring.
If no one has found a definative answer I'll pop the wheel off later to take a photo for you

Here is another in a series of primitive diagrams, this time showing how the contact should be made. I've found it a bit difficult to re-shape this satisfactorily when I've had the copper connector snag and become distorted. Take your time and you should be okay. Long-nosed pliers, I reckon. You may have to remove the mechanism from the column so you can bend the copper contact down and re-introduce some 'spring' effect, if it's been lost.
The contact end of the copper connector should be nicely rounded, not with a 'flat' as in the primitive diagram - well, Windows "Paint" is only what it is! Perhaps not too important where the point of contact with the brass ring is, just not too near the edges.
Give the points of contact a clean-up with fine emery paper while you have it all in your hands.
Image
Yes, that's correct the armature should be touching the brass/copper bit, NOT the gap between the copper bit and it's mounting.

I had a similar failure recently where both the indicators and horn dropped out ... take a look where the wires come up in the dash from the steering column assembly ... there should be a black wire separated out from the rest ... check that this is tied to earth.

Hi Fellas

Thank you all for the advice, have already started on a 'Heath Robinson' on the copper contact. So far so good.

Regards

Richard
