Here is another in a series of primitive diagrams, this time showing how the contact should be made. I've found it a bit difficult to re-shape this satisfactorily when I've had the copper connector snag and become distorted. Take your time and you should be okay. Long-nosed pliers, I reckon. You may have to remove the mechanism from the column so you can bend the copper contact down and re-introduce some 'spring' effect, if it's been lost.
The contact end of the copper connector should be nicely rounded, not with a 'flat' as in the primitive diagram - well, Windows "Paint" is only what it is! Perhaps not too important where the point of contact with the brass ring is, just not too near the edges.
Give the points of contact a clean-up with fine emery paper while you have it all in your hands.<br>
