Well there are 5 1098 engines here, none of which have traces of black paint, but all of them have the cover plate over the hole, they can't all have come from Austins, surely?

A Morris engine no. should start 10MA and an Austin engine 10AA?

According to Neil Cairns's excellent article on BMC engines, the V and H lettering after the first digits was introduced around 1970. In the strange worlds of Longbridge and Cowley, V (vertical) meant in-line, and H (horizontal) meant transverse. He says the only Moggy application for 10V engines was the van with closed circuit breather.
