Do something useful Squiggle!
Well as I didn't get to the National due to health issues, I feel I should do something useful to make up for it!
Finally going to attack those [hopefully] small areas of rust around the bottom of the doors.
But someone who has approached me twice about buying my car [in Northampton ] gave me a list of what I should and shouldn't be doing to the car. I didn't ask for the advice actually.
He was trying to make the point that he could REALLY look after such a rare car and cringed when I said it's not for sale and it's my daily driver. Saying I'd wear the parts out!
He said I should be soaking the leaf springs in some kind of oil [strong Irish accent meant I didn't understand all he said]. The rusted areas should be filled with lead [?] filler and the paint I should use is the one produced before cellulose was used. He said he had access to plenty of this paint [didn't understand the name of it].
I've got the usual filler from Halfords and have been advised to use Finegan's number 1 primer.
Any ideas folks.
Thanks.
Will have to go and do something else for now.

Oh, I did try and have a good look around so I wasn't repeating old stuff.Judge wrote:I think I have already said enough about this subjectI wont say anymore
Where should I look Mr Bill?
And he told me I should be using vaseline on the seats to prevent them from cracking!
I would like to know what to use. Was considering saddle soap.
The original manual says to use a damp cloth! Perhaps they didn't expect the cars to last this long.
Are you doing something useful?

next time you see him just run him over and tell him he forgot to tell you how to look after the brakes!
use saddle soap / hide food not vasaline..
lead loading is great if you can do it, if you can not, getting it done is expensive. so plastic filler is great provided you have killed any rust below it and follow the instructions.
as for rust prevention i can not remember what came out best in a practical classic test but i think that no1 did well.
if he approaches you again and you were not able to run him over just tell him you are going to drop a chevy v8 in it just to annoy him!

Just tidying up a replacement front bumper so, probably won't want to soil it by running him over......charlie_morris_minor wrote:next time you see him just run him over and tell him he forgot to tell you how to look after the brakes!

I'll tell him about the v8 and that it's gonna be resprayed to look like a ladybird.
Will take my Autoglym leather cleaner and polish back to Halfords. Saddle soap makes sense as it isn't soiled.
Hope you are doing something useful too

Are you sure he is not part of the travelling community?Squiggle wrote: strong Irish accent meant I didn't understand all he said
Not really that useful but I just spent the afternoon keeping the morris minor end up and drving about the countryside. Was a wonderful sunny afternoon. England is such a beautiful country (in most places) although single track lanes can be quite hairy in places!

You win Chrissie, I think this link, although there are others, will show you how I feel about the importance of preserving originality wherever possible.Squiggle wrote:Oh, I did try and have a good look around so I wasn't repeating old stuff.Judge wrote:I think I have already said enough about this subjectI wont say anymore

I bought some parts, collected a windscreen, and some magazines for someone else - does that count as useful?Did you do something useful?
On top of that I got a lot of fresh air and caught up with more vitamin E (via the sunburn).
Lead loading - useful in some circumstances however to apply you need to heat the area with a blowtorch... not good for any surrounding paint. That's why they invented epoxy filler!!
I think you should fit a V6 not a V8, as you'll find it a bit easier to work on ;-) (less spark plugs etc...)

Also another passion, gardening, and my children have given me tickets to the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show

Of course I am also tying up loose ends for MOT-UK. Still getting people coming forward now.
