Post by sickosanding »

Hi,
just bought a tin of hammerite anti rust primer, to use on the bonnet i have just finished stripping to bare metal.

Am i barking up the wrong tree, should i stick to spraying? if so what first etch primer, normal primer etc etc

Cheers.

I applied Bonda Prima to all my panels and the smaller sections I used a brush 'just to get it covered' which was fine at the time, but it did result in more rubbing down than if I had sprayed it!
Recommendation:- spray it

I would agree - go for spraying if you can. I fitted a bottom door skin replacement panel and it needed a bit of work to blend in. As a final coat, I used 3 coats of a thick cellulose filler primer, brushed on, then sanded it back by hand using a guide coat. It took ages to get a good smooth finish.
Sraying would avoid that horrible sanding task.

ok, lesson learnt. spraying it is.
Definately on highly visible panels like the bonnet, what a nightmare trying to get it flat, i now have one arm like Geoff Capes.

The hammerite stuff 'may' be of use under the car - where not in the public eye!
