Hi,
just bought a tin of hammerite anti rust primer, to use on the bonnet i have just finished stripping to bare metal.
Am i barking up the wrong tree, should i stick to spraying? if so what first etch primer, normal primer etc etc

I would agree - go for spraying if you can. I fitted a bottom door skin replacement panel and it needed a bit of work to blend in. As a final coat, I used 3 coats of a thick cellulose filler primer, brushed on, then sanded it back by hand using a guide coat. It took ages to get a good smooth finish.
Sraying would avoid that horrible sanding task.
