Starter Motor

Post by Jefftav »

HI all,

I fitted a new starter motor to my 1275 engine yesterday but it and it engages and turns and starts the car but then still seems to sometimes stay in mesh with the flywheel. I can sounds really awful but then after 2/3 secs sorts its self out.

I have taken the new starter off to take back to the factors as I assume it is a fault with the starter motor (as when I connected it strait to a battery using jump leads it certainly wasn't spinning the tooth part right up the shaft and then it seemed to jam on the way back) I also wanted to check that both the 1275 and 1098 engine share the same starter motor. I have a type 9 conversion but as far as I remember the flywheel was the 1098 Minor one with the spigot bush fitted to the flywheel.

Cheers, Jeff

Some say you need to add a washer to the starter motor to make sure the Bendix clears the flywheel. Not done this yet myself Jeff - I understand it doesn't need doing on ALL starters!

I took some off the face of my starter motor housing to allow it to sit further forward to clear the flywheel but if as you says it clears itself then it must be the bendix sticking...

I used the same starter on the 1275 Midget engine that I took off the 1098. You should be able to wind the cog down the spiral thread and back without it sticking.
