If your going to change the thermostat you might as well spend a while flushing the system backwards and forwards until the water flows clean. Simply take one of the heater hoses off and flush it both ways.

Did you use the temperature sender from the old engine or one that came with the new one? They are supposed to be matched for the gauge to read accurately.

changed the thermostat and it have improved a incy bit.
giving it a run to dover tomorow, it will be is first long(ish) run, so I will see what it is like after that. (and stop and let her cool down if she gets to hot)
At a pinch - run it without any stat fitted to see what happens. This should not be done permanently - but will be better than overheating the 'new' engine!
Well - seriously retarded timing can cause hot running - as can too weak a mixture. Advance the timing till you get pinking - then back it off slightly, and have a look at the spark plugs. Should be nice light beige - if white then dangerously weak.
