How to change a light bulb!

When I read the title to this thread I thought it was going to be the article from this Saturday's Telegraph. Apparently it is well nigh impossible to change the headlight bulbs on a large proportion of modern family cars. Even some of the dealer mechanics were stumped!
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

When I bought my 2005 Polo Sport, the dealer warned me about replaceing headlight bulbs.
