Hmm - I've not looked too hard at the thread (other than to chuckle about how similar your 53 was to my 54 when I got it)...
But now I've taken a close look, I have a question!

What's the big hole under the rear seat? Is that original and if so is it special to some markets or certain ages of Minor?
Most of Mine have been Minor 1000's so I've not seen one of those.

Oct 06: back from Dresden with my Trabant 601 Kombi
Jan 07: back from a month thru North Africa (via Timbuktu) in a S3 Landy
June 07 - back from Zwickau Trabi Treffen
Aug 07 & Aug 08 - back from the Lands End to Orkney in 71 pickup
Sept 2010 - finally gave up breaking down in a SII Landy...
where to break down next?
2013... managed to seize my 1275 just by driving it round the block :(

Maybe it's for access to the axle level plug?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Thats right. It is a standard fitment all all Series MM's and early Series 2's to enable you to top up the back axle! :D

Something else I have learnt today, although I confess to not having an early car so I am not that familiar with them.
Cheers

There wasn't one on my 54 or 55 so it must have stopped around 53.
Something new I've learnt too :D

It's no custum rooflining.

Series MM and (presumably) early sII had hardboard headlining, which comes in three main pieces.
