Battery

Post by Willie »

Oh Woe! My Halfords battery is dying! Not bad for £21-99 as it has lasted
eight and a half years.

Considering average battery life is 5 years for a Lead Acid Battery you have done well! I would try to get the exact part number again, or, how about a Calcium Technology battery? :D

COSTCO batteries are great value (mine now 7 years) and not at all expensive - Makro are also good price but can't vouch for longevity. 'Calcium' technology is just a gimmick - there's only a tiny amount of Ca in there!!

The good quality CA batteries completely replace all of the antimony, which removes the problem of antimony deposits forming on the negative plates, which sets up 'micro' batteries within the battery, which in turn increases self discharge. So if you buy a Wrought Lead Calcium Grid battery it's not a gimmick :-? In fact, they are ideal for vehicles that are seldom used. Or of course, you can just keep chucking cheap batteries at it, either method works well.

Not had any Sb deposits so far!! Still think it's a gimmick i'm afraid - no doubt there is some improvement - but not worth paying over the odds. My Costco battery was £23 some 7 years ago and still cranks the high compression/big valve head engine like new.

Well, I wouldn't call buying a new battery every eight years wasting
money! I bought a Makro unit today and it was almost exactly twice the price paid eight years ago. Has the average wage also doubled in the last eight years I wonder?
