Fuel Tank

Do they get leaky ?
Seem to have a good pong of petrol coming from the back of the trav, tank looks in good order, where the guage is fitted looks like quite a poor fit as in gasket not sitting correctly.
So just debating taking the whole tank out entirely and giving it a proper looking at this weekend, or is that just making work?

the tank can rust through but more likely the seal on the gauge, also check the rubber pipe leading to the petrol filler neck for leaks.

You never mentioned but does it smell of petrol as your driving? if it does then could be either the sender gasket or filler pipe. If it doesn't then it could be either a tiny hole rusted through the tank or the drain plug is leaking.

also bare in mind if you can smell petrol as you are driving, it could be coming from the engine bay,(leaking carb/fuel pump) rather than the tank.

The guage gasket really is sloppily fitted, poor focus on this pic but you can certainly see it not sat square over the aperture. Appears to have missed the hole completely at the farthest side.

The seam doesnt look very clever either, so maybe looking at a new tank, although it could be repairable?

And there was seapage under the bonnet, the pipe shown here was perished away where it joined the carb, not too clever above the exhaust manifold !

You still don't say whether you can smell petrol inside the car but that sender gasket is far from correct!

Ah ! yes it is inside the smell, originally thought it was the pipe to the carb, but having fixed that its still quite noticeable.
Think the gasket being poorly fitted is pretty typical of the standard of maintenance on the whole car, just a matter of discovering the next thing that needs replacing

what's your sender gasket made of, orkney? i thought they were made of cork but yours looks frilly

Its cork Wibble, very poor pic - the frilliness is just the really poor fit, meant to got it sorted yesterday but never had time.
Think to save work will refit the gasket and check the filler pipe for good seal, fill it with fuel and see if then the seam is dodgy.
New tank is definitely on the list but would be nice to put it off until the proper strip down once winter sets in.
