Has any one had a MOT with one of these to test the braking.

I did today instead of the rollers he used a device to measure the braking efficency from inside the car on a road test. Much better because it is not affected by the balance so easier to pass. We also did a run with the hand brake. Then he put the results into the computer and computer said yes!

these are called tapley meters used normaly on constant 4 wheel drive vehicles that can't be put on the rollers, your car was done with one probably because his rollers were bust or out of action,I only use then on constant 4 wheel drive in our testing station..regards glyn

He said that the morris wasn't heavy enough for the rollers???? and it only had single circuit brakes.

The single circuit brake is an interesting point - my local fully computerised testing station told me that the car had passed even though one rear wheel was 28% and the other only 12%. Apparantly the computer had decided that it was dual circuit, and that the reading was OK. Common sense says that there was something wrong (semi-seized cylinder of course)

They need to have a weight to dial in for the rollers - so if weight unknow it's the good old Tapley. Good excuse to have a drive in the car maybe ??

OK, I discreetly corrected the spelling once and now it's been changed back - what's the joke I'm missing? :D

I think RR must have been talking about the breaking sweat as he waited for the test results.

I've had varoius vehicles tested with a Tapley meter - generally old or obscure stuff where the weight isnt quoted on the wall chart. Generally means an easy pass and a blast down the road with the tester. Last one was a '30s two seater special with minimal bodywork and old hard crossply tyres. It just locked up and slid, leaving two black lines down the road. Still passed! The minors always go on the brake testing rollers though, so we find out which wheel cylinders are seized or drums full of oil.... Not half as fun!
cheers

Yes my Minor is tested out on the road due to being too low to fit on the rollers.

Its great because when I hit the brakes the machine goes off the scale!

I thought it was only cars with a limited slip diff that got a road test these days.

My local MOT place has started using the road test method on most of my cars. (Last time I think that it was just because he wanted to drive a Trabant...)
Officially he says it's because the weight isn't stated, therefore can't use the rollers in line with latest regs.

If the brakes pull badly to one side, this should be instantly spotted on a road test - however some braking issues are much harder to spot (eg rear wheel brake balance)
