Timing chain replacement - single or duplex?

Post by badfelafel »

Its time to replace the timing chain...

Is it worth changing the sprockets etc etc to fit a duplex kit?
Or is the single one fine?????

thx all!

Single is fine for a standard engine. The later Mini engines had a slightly different single chain with a proper tensioner fitted. This may be worth investigating (uses different timing cover with bulge) - as your sprockets are likely to be well worn if it's been running 'loose' for a while.

Thanks... so if I have to change the sprocket anyway, it might be worthwhile. Does it have any compromising effects on engine performance?

Loose chain causes valve timing to be a bit retarded - so it's not exactly helpful !! But they don't usually give any problems - although someone on here had the timing chain/sprockets collapse on them recently.

If you are going to work on that area anyway it would be foolish not to
fit duplex while you are at it. The complete kit is quite cheap and the
only thing which seems to put some people off is the fact that the two
lower bolts have to be removed and replaced with countersunk screws.
This shouldn't be a problem to you.
